cost effective

Japanese Knotweed can be treated in situ with the use of herbicides, this is a far more cost effective method that typically costs just 10-15% of the price of excavation and removal from site by physical/mechanical means. Specialist herbicides are required and these are to be applied by competent and trained technicians.

Spray Treatment

The successful use of herbicides to eradicate knotweed requires the expertise of the CSJK and the JK technician. It is important to ensure that there has been a detailed site risk assessment undertaken and the existence of drainage or water courses identified to avoid contamination with herbicides. Spraying is the most effective method of herbicide application, although several applications may need to be undertaken over a number of years, depending on the extent of infestation.
Spraying should be carried out between May and October with is considered to be the optimum period of application. Ideally 2/3 treatments would be applied during this period.

Stem Injection

This method of application is used during inclement weather conditions and is a method of injection of herbicide directly into the stem of the cane, between the first and second nodes.
This method is also used near water courses where the over spray/drift of airborne herbicide is eliminated.
Stems greater than 8mm diameter can be injected with the smaller stems being sprayed or weed/leaf wiped.
Stem injection is applied by the use of specialist injection equipment and is a more labour intensive method of application.
This method can also be used near habitats where greater care is needed to protect habitats of wildlife.

weed Wiping

Weed wiping is when a hand held wiper / sponge is used to apply the herbicide onto the leaf surface of the knotweed,
like stem injection, it does not affect the neighbouring vegetation and water courses.
It is an alternative option to the knotweed injection of the stems when the stems are not thick enough.
Weed wiping is more time consuming and is only practical on smaller infestations.
